Aimée de JonghAimée de Jongh
The Spotlight exhibit provides a behind-the-scenes look at Aimée de Jongh. She is considered one of the greatest talents in the Dutch comic book world, having developed into an internationally renowned illustrator and storyteller. In addition to graphic novels and comics, De Jongh also creates illustrations and animated films. From July 8 to October 29, the work of this creative jack-of-all-trades takes center stage at Museum Storyworld in Forum Groningen. The presentation in the Spotlight Room gives a look behind the scenes and shows, among other things, how she went to work on Days of Sand, her best-known graphic novel that was awarded no less than fifteen prizes worldwide.
Aimée de Jongh's comic career began at the age of 22 with the comic series Snippers for daily newspaper Metro (2012-2017). For this she made a total of 1400 episodes about the daily life of everyone, and in particular (alter ego) Aimée and roommate Stef. In 2021, she released the graphic novel Days of Sand. In this book, she tells the story of young photographer John Clark who travels to Oklahoma to make a photo report of the Dust Bowl, an ecological disaster that occurred in the 1930s in Canada and the United States. Days of Sand has since been published in several languages, including French, English, German and Spanish. The English translation of the book has been nominated for the Eisner Awards - the Oscars of the American comic book industry - to be presented on July 21.
In the Spotligh exhibition, in addition to original sketches and drawings, you will see the research De Jongh did to create the historical setting of Days of Sand. Furthermore, you will discover the differences and similarities between creating a graphic novel and a comic book.
Storyworld can be found on the sixth floor of Forum Groningen. A ticket for Storyworld gives free admission to the mini-exhibition in the Spotlight room.
