Michael Dudok de Wit

From January 23, we will highlight the work of one of the biggest names in the Dutch animation world at Storyworld: Michael Dudok de Wit.

The animated films of Michael Dudok de Wit (1953) are appreciated worldwide for their themes and visual richness. The Dutch Oscar-winner sets high standards for his work. In his hands, animation becomes an art form that sometimes subtly and sometimes intensely expresses human experiences and emotions. The result resonates with people all over the world.

His film The Monk and the Fish (1994) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Animated Film. A few years later, Dudok de Wit received the award for his short animated film Father and Daughter (2000), which won 21 other awards. The poetic power of his short films prompted the major Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli to want to create a feature film with him. Dudok de Wit, in his pursuit of perfection, took 10 years to realize it, aided by a team of talented French animators. The Red Turtle (2016) became an immediate animation classic.

The work of Michael Dudok de Wit will be on display from January 23, 2027, in the spotlight room of Storyworld.

Through hand-drawn storyboards and illustrations, we will take you through Michael Dudok de Wit's worlds filled with longing, timelessness, and the relationship between humans and nature in this Storyworld Spotlight.
